Revitalizing Dissent: Imperatives for Critical Surveillance Inquiry

In this introduction to Surveillance & Society’s twentieth anniversary issue, we reflect on the journal’s role in formation and maturation of field some many areas need further study intervention. keeping with one original objectives “encouraging debate dissent,” argue that it is imperative reaffirm dissenting posture. Such dissent would be primarily critical decolonial, concentrate its energies correcting social environmental problems. Some more intensive inquiry are 1) surveillance / platform data capitalism, 2) war conflict, 3) disinformation media manipulation, 4) racial injustice carcerality, 5) intersectional violence oppression, 6) crises climate collapse. Fortunately, as recent publications journal affirm, scholars already moving these directions, we, editors, doing everything can support such work academics producing it.
